In 2005, the National Council on Aging commissioned the Oregon Research Institute to conduct a study investigating the merits of the cobblestone walkways, or "reflexology parks" found in many Asian and European countries. 108 previously inactive, senior citizen participants were engaged in a walking program; half walked on a conventional surface while the other half walked on mat of simulated cobblestones. After the 16 week trial, the cobblestone walkers showed significant improvement in balance, blood pressure, and walking speed over those who walked on flat surfaces. Researchers concluded that walking on cobblestones could legitimately be considered a "therapeutic and health-enhancing alternative exercise for older adults" (Journal of the American Geriatric Society, 2005; see the entire article here .
